Five Questions

Five Questions: Todd Birmingham

By Danielle Sanzone, The Record

Todd Birmingham, originally from Troy, is a science and social studies teacher at the junior high school in Watervliet, where he used to play basketball as a student. The Ithaca College graduate is also an actor who has starred in independent films and national commercials.

Q: How did you get into acting?

A: My first year of college I was in a theatrical play called “Reckless.” Then I was the lead actor in a video project for a communications class. I did more than two dozen student films and television shows in college. I just really enjoyed it.

Q: What is your favorite commercial you’ve done?

A: I liked a Price Chopper commercial I did that was shown around Valentine’s Day — I had kisses all over my face. Then, in a Time Warner Cable commercial, I tried to yank a tooth out of my mouth using a string and door. So, I had this string hanging out of my mouth with this great expression. It was fun.

Q: Any highlights with making independent films and/or commercials?

A: I got to work with the smoking man from the “X-files.” It was on a movie called “The Last Round” filmed by the Masucci brothers, who are directors based in Scotia. And I did a national Diet Coke commercial which aired for three months. It paid $8,700 and I got health insurance for one year.

Q: So, what do you like about teaching?

A: There is a lot to like about teaching. While educating these kids, I am also hopefully fostering a love of education in general so they learn some life lessons along the way.

Q: What is your favorite tie that you own?

A: Anything my wife picks out.
